E.V.O: SEARCH FOR EDEN

When I made my website, a playthrough of EVO was one of the first things I tried putting on there. I never finished it; In fact, the page has been removed. I didn't finish it not because I didn't like it, but because I was unmotivated to write so damn much. I eventually lost the emulator and all my progress, so here's an actual review (with some bits stolen from the old EVO zone).

I have always been a sucker for primal/barbarian aesthetic. Dinosaurs n shit and cool reptile-like monstrosities have always enamoured me. EVO is a game where you play as a little creature evolving to be let into heaven; leaving nothing but blood in your path. You go from being a little trogfish all the way to humans and aliens. The game has some beautiful spritework as well.

Sidenote: I lost most playthru images when cleaning files, so... All you get is amphibian.

This game is a massive grindfest. You spend minutes to hours just pressing A at a creature to kill it just to get some meat and evo points. Consuming is the main mechanic of the game, which is in line with a game about becoming the perfect creature. It's a grindfest, but a rather quick one compared to other games.

The balancing of this game is completely wack, though. Some bosses you breeze through like butter, others kick your fucking ass. I had a gamer meltdown at the queen bee boss. It's also possible to be stunlocked into taking all your health in damage from things like stage hazards and charging enemies. The gameplay is also mediocre since it's just press A, go left, eat creature. I do like some of the secrets, though, like becoming a mermaid. I can't find any documentation about it, but I KNOW you can become an alien.

Overall, I think the only redeeming part of this game is that it's charming, and not very long. It's one of those games you'd probably have a better time watching than playing. It's janky, but it's cute.
